Costume Projects 2022 - Midterm Review

The year is a bit more than halfway done, and looking back on my 2022 Wishlist, let's see what I've actually accomplished on my list and what has changed.

From the Originals List

Goro the Kitsune - Stalled 🟡

I started making the pig skin leather leg wraps, but I think I screwed it up already and need to remake them in a different material. I've selected my leather for the bracers. I plan on using my Cricut to engrave the edges of the leather in a fun design that I have yet to make/find. I also need to remake the ears somehow and figure out how to make the tails. Knitting 3 tails will take a long time, so I'm thinking that I'll actually make them out of faux fur fabric, which means getting said fabric. We'll see what wins out. I could still finish this costume before the end of the year, but I'm not feeling very motivated to do so at this time.

Sakura the Kitsune - Replaced by Wisteria Fox - Finished 😀

When I started Wisteria Fox, I said it would replace my Sakura fox wishlist character. And this was true and came true! It was my big, fancy project over the winter! And it is done with some minor tweaks I could add. Sakura fox is a character in a VN I've been fooling around with. So the design concept will not go to waste. Wisteria fox is a character in it too.

Red Fox - Scrapped ⛔

The costume concept has become a character for the previously mentioned VN thing. But I'm not interested in making a third fox character this year.

Polish Vampire Hunter - Semi-In-Progress 🐢

Made some small pieces of it. Namely got a kerchief and made some red poppy hair clips. I purchased a pattern for the bustle and made faux hakama pants! So to make the costume for real, I'd like to purchase a blouse, or I may have one I could use. I'd need to design, embroider and make the vest. I'd follow the pattern for the bustle and caplet. I'd probably knit arm warmers instead of making bracers out of leather like I originally thought. I have contemplated how I'd make my chain link sword similar to Ivy from Soul Caliber. It'd be a fun 3D printing and constructing challenge.

Unicorn - finally settled on some sort of design 🖌

I've purchased hoof boots and purchased a ghawazee coat/dress/surcoat pattern, and a leafy blouse/dress. I have a horn that I need to remake into a circlet and latex faun ears. I could use one of my many spare wigs or go with my current hair. I haven't made plans for a tail, but I don't think I have the patience to make one this year.

Lotara the Drow Elf - scrapped and reused material for other things ♻

I used the fabric I to line her coat with into an Octopus skirt and swim dress combo. It looks great! But I think that I'm officially scrapping this costume and using the material for other things. I really have to figure out how to use the stretch velvet!

From the Cosplay List

Linkle - Scrapped 🚫
Sadly, no longer interested in this project. As cute as she is! I'll have to re-use the wig for something.

Dalish - still backlogged 🤷
I don't have the heart to abandon it completely yet. But I'm not going to get around to it at all this year.

Uravity - No longer Considering 👎
I still LOVE her boots, but just not interested in making it a whole project. Plus, I don't think it'll look as good on me.

Rescue - Scrapped 🚫
My hips keep getting bigger, and that just gets emphasized in this armor. Not until I lose significant inches, which will take a few years it feels like.

Rengoku - playfully knitting 🧶
So not really cosplaying, but I am knitting parts of his costume. Namely the cloak and leg wraps. I also made the Hakama (sorta) and an apron that looks like the uniform top. Did I just make home wear based on this character? Yeah...I think I did. I'd like to finish the shawl before the year ends, which I could do. I could finish it in 20 days or so if I knit 10 rows a day. So...maybe another 3 months. LOL. I've also cast on for the leg warmer socks + tabi.

New Costumes

Nezuko - Knitting! 👍

So I got the idea to possibly knit this entire costume! Crazy right? I've cast on for the leg wraps and got patterns for a kimono top blouse, a wrap skirt, an obi style belt, a haori jacket, and a wig. I 3D printed the muzzle. I'll probably take 3 years to finish with how little I knit. LOL. I'd be happy to make the blouse, belt, and leg wraps at this point. Not likely to finish by the end of the year, but certainly something to keep me busy.

Wendigo - In Progress 🏗

A stash-busting project for Halloween this year. I have the mask, antlers, and claws all 3D printed. I got the morph suit face covering to hide my eyes, and it looks super spooky already. Still trying to fiddle with the mask because currently, the upper and lower jaw are not aligning well. (It keeps looking like an underbite with is doofy...not spooky.) I ordered hoof boots to wear with it. I have not started the hood or cloak yet, but I don't expect it will take very long at all.

Hakama Series - Side Opening Covers/Pockets

The side openings on hakama can feel a bit exposing if you're not wearing a full kimono underneath or perhaps you just can't stand to be without pockets! While these things are not necessarily historically accurate for the area, you can make it work.  Modesty Panels These will be panels of fabric that hang from your waist at your sides where the openings of the hakama are. You can choose to attach these to the belts (himo) of your hakama or to make your own waistband.  You can use any kind of cloth but the idea is to use any left over clothe from making your hakama. But if you want different colors or prints go for it.  You will cut a rectangle with rounded corners that is 16" tall and about an inch wider than your side openings (sasahida). To keep it from fraying, either use a serger or overlock machine to finish the edges except at the top. Alternatively, use a zig-zag stitch on your regular sewing machine all around the edges except the top..  Make a waistband fro...

Becoming a Kitsune: Tail Design Considerations

The key element of a kitsune character is the tail (or tails in most cases). You'll need to determine what you want the tail to look like so you can determine the best method of attachment. The primary consideration for attachment is weight . The things that affect weight are size and materials. So let's get into it! Tail Shapes These are the common shape profiles I see for making kitsune-style tails whether it's a fur tail or crystal or unnatural.  A: Tube Sock - a uniform girth and rounded end. Close to reality.  B: Pointed Tube - a uniform girth that tapers at the tip.  C: Squirrel Style - wider in the middle rounded tip. Very much like an oval shape.  D: Pointed Barrel/Paintbrush  - the tail gets wider in the middle and tapers at the tip and at the top.  Tail Poses Another aspect of tail shape is how you want it to pose or hold in place.  Limp - a relaxed tail that hangs down loosely. It doesn't hold any pose.  C Curve - the tail is arche...

Kimono Series: Measure & Cutting the Kimono

This is the primary benefit to making your own kimono, having it tailored to you! In this post, I will go over the following:  Body Measurements you need Names of the Panels and their dimensions Calculating Fabric needs Tailoring points And a few tips and resources With measurements there are major and minor measurements. Focus on the major measurements for calculating fabric amount and the size and shape of the panel pieces. The minor measurements are mostly for construction so you put the pieces together correctly and they fall in the right place for your body. Lets start with the measurements you need to take on the body.  Body Measurements There are only 3 body measurements for kimono, although they will differ slightly between a masculine and feminine kimono. You need:  Yuki  - a measurement taken from the spine at the base of the neck to the shoulder joint, then to the wrist while holding the arm at a 45° angle. (You CAN T-Pose it but it is a little less accura...
