Costume Projects 2022 - Midterm Review

The year is a bit more than halfway done, and looking back on my 2022 Wishlist, let's see what I've actually accomplished on my list and what has changed.

From the Originals List

Goro the Kitsune - Stalled 🟡

I started making the pig skin leather leg wraps, but I think I screwed it up already and need to remake them in a different material. I've selected my leather for the bracers. I plan on using my Cricut to engrave the edges of the leather in a fun design that I have yet to make/find. I also need to remake the ears somehow and figure out how to make the tails. Knitting 3 tails will take a long time, so I'm thinking that I'll actually make them out of faux fur fabric, which means getting said fabric. We'll see what wins out. I could still finish this costume before the end of the year, but I'm not feeling very motivated to do so at this time.

Sakura the Kitsune - Replaced by Wisteria Fox - Finished 😀

When I started Wisteria Fox, I said it would replace my Sakura fox wishlist character. And this was true and came true! It was my big, fancy project over the winter! And it is done with some minor tweaks I could add. Sakura fox is a character in a VN I've been fooling around with. So the design concept will not go to waste. Wisteria fox is a character in it too.

Red Fox - Scrapped ⛔

The costume concept has become a character for the previously mentioned VN thing. But I'm not interested in making a third fox character this year.

Polish Vampire Hunter - Semi-In-Progress 🐢

Made some small pieces of it. Namely got a kerchief and made some red poppy hair clips. I purchased a pattern for the bustle and made faux hakama pants! So to make the costume for real, I'd like to purchase a blouse, or I may have one I could use. I'd need to design, embroider and make the vest. I'd follow the pattern for the bustle and caplet. I'd probably knit arm warmers instead of making bracers out of leather like I originally thought. I have contemplated how I'd make my chain link sword similar to Ivy from Soul Caliber. It'd be a fun 3D printing and constructing challenge.

Unicorn - finally settled on some sort of design 🖌

I've purchased hoof boots and purchased a ghawazee coat/dress/surcoat pattern, and a leafy blouse/dress. I have a horn that I need to remake into a circlet and latex faun ears. I could use one of my many spare wigs or go with my current hair. I haven't made plans for a tail, but I don't think I have the patience to make one this year.

Lotara the Drow Elf - scrapped and reused material for other things ♻

I used the fabric I to line her coat with into an Octopus skirt and swim dress combo. It looks great! But I think that I'm officially scrapping this costume and using the material for other things. I really have to figure out how to use the stretch velvet!

From the Cosplay List

Linkle - Scrapped 🚫
Sadly, no longer interested in this project. As cute as she is! I'll have to re-use the wig for something.

Dalish - still backlogged 🤷
I don't have the heart to abandon it completely yet. But I'm not going to get around to it at all this year.

Uravity - No longer Considering 👎
I still LOVE her boots, but just not interested in making it a whole project. Plus, I don't think it'll look as good on me.

Rescue - Scrapped 🚫
My hips keep getting bigger, and that just gets emphasized in this armor. Not until I lose significant inches, which will take a few years it feels like.

Rengoku - playfully knitting 🧶
So not really cosplaying, but I am knitting parts of his costume. Namely the cloak and leg wraps. I also made the Hakama (sorta) and an apron that looks like the uniform top. Did I just make home wear based on this character? Yeah...I think I did. I'd like to finish the shawl before the year ends, which I could do. I could finish it in 20 days or so if I knit 10 rows a day. So...maybe another 3 months. LOL. I've also cast on for the leg warmer socks + tabi.

New Costumes

Nezuko - Knitting! 👍

So I got the idea to possibly knit this entire costume! Crazy right? I've cast on for the leg wraps and got patterns for a kimono top blouse, a wrap skirt, an obi style belt, a haori jacket, and a wig. I 3D printed the muzzle. I'll probably take 3 years to finish with how little I knit. LOL. I'd be happy to make the blouse, belt, and leg wraps at this point. Not likely to finish by the end of the year, but certainly something to keep me busy.

Wendigo - In Progress 🏗

A stash-busting project for Halloween this year. I have the mask, antlers, and claws all 3D printed. I got the morph suit face covering to hide my eyes, and it looks super spooky already. Still trying to fiddle with the mask because currently, the upper and lower jaw are not aligning well. (It keeps looking like an underbite with is doofy...not spooky.) I ordered hoof boots to wear with it. I have not started the hood or cloak yet, but I don't expect it will take very long at all.

Costume Fabric Cheat Sheet: How to Pick Fabric for your Costume

In the previous post , I laid out how to describe different aspects of fabric when trying to find a good fabric for your costume. This post will go over ways to apply those terms and actually pick out a fabric for your costume. I will attempt to teach by examples.  4 Avenues of Research Cheat! I mean...look at other cosplays. You can often find images of photoshoots which make for better references than illustrations. If you are lucky, the costume maker may have posted a journal about how they made their costume or at least list the materials they used.  Check for Suggestions in Sewing Patterns Sewing patterns will list suggested fabrics to use for the costume. Pop those terms into a search engine and see the results.  Historical, Cultural, or Real Life Examples With a search engine or books, you can find out about how clothes were made back in the day or what materials are used around the world. You can also check the tags on your clothes to see what it's made of.  Narrow down to

Hakama Series - Hibakama (Scarlet Hakama)

The bright red hakama with a white kimono is a common sight in both anime and video game characters. Shrine maidens or Miko also wear this combination of colors when they work at Shinto shrines. Honestly, there is a LOT of history and cultural significance wrapped up in this one.  Anime/Games: Inuyasha, Genshin Impact, Sailor Moon,  So let's talk Design. Design Considerations Cultural Significance This is one I'd pay attention to if I was creating a character of my own. I assume that already created characters have had this research done and have taken their artistic license.  Some of the research taught me a few things: The color is technically scarlet or vermillion, not "red". 🤷 Miko are not part of the Shinto clergy. Sometimes they are just seasonal workers.  Generally, Miko are young women in their teens or early 20s. After a certain age, they wear different colors.  This was based on Heian nobility colors and fashions.  Color Like I said earlier, the color is ve

Costume Design: Guiding Principles

Part of designing costumes is finding a way to pick from many solutions. Limiting these choices can be the art of design.  I have some of my own "Guiding Principles" or Design Principles when it comes to costume design. Some of these constraints are based on non-mutable factors. (Or currently difficult to change.) The fun ones are a bit on the arbitrary side. These are self-imposed limitations for the costume that as a designer I decide to apply to any given costume.  The point of these principles is to help you make a final decision if you are paralyzed by many choices. I may get hung up on some pretty silly things, so at the very least, this helps me move forward and kind of imply that I had a plan all along.  Immutable Design Principles We might run into some touchy subjects here but whatever, here we go! Immutable principles are either constraints your life situation has you in at any given time or core beliefs about what you wear. This can mean things like religious beli
