Kimono Project 6: Polish Folkart Kimono

Finally an original design for once. 😜 This was because I wanted to use my embroidery machine and I saw someone else do a nice folkart style embroidered kimono.

Placing the patterns

I am going to pair it with a haori that will also have embroidery on it.

Juban

This will reuse my white cotton nagajuban that I made. However, I am making a haneri to attach to it that includes some embroidered ribbon I got on Etsy. The ribbon feature hearts and edelweiss flowers as a nod to Sound of Music and Austria which is part of my heritage.

Kimono

This will be a hitoe kimono with tomosode sleeves like the others but made with a polyester linen in hunter green. If I have enough fabric, I will make a reinforced back seam. The embroidery includes a paper-cut style flower in the corners of the front panels and another tulip floral pattern in the corner of the sleeves. A single tulip will go along the back panel in the middle flanked by two folk art style horses.

There is a cat on the front left panel corner near the bottom and possible above the obi (may keep the top half plain). The sleeve corner will also include folk art foxes.

Obi

I'm making a hanhaba obi out of cotton sateen that has a vertical rainbow stripe pattern to imitate some of the Polish skirts I've seen. I could pair it with my white obiage and pink obijime.

Haori

I plan to stylize the haori to mimic a Polish vest with flower petal edges on the body. I got a black chiffon for the haori and I combined some SVG files to create an embroidery pattern make a fake coat of arms. The coat of arms features 2 pegasus flanking a lion-headed shield with a cross all to represent the Winged Hussars.

Footwear

This will pair with white tabi and my white strapped geta made of wood. It's got some embroidered bunnies and painted flowers on it too.

The bright red hakama with a white kimono is a common sight in both anime and video game characters. Shrine maidens or Miko also wear this combination of colors when they work at Shinto shrines. This is the classic style that you likely think of when you hear the word "Hakama". Very wide-legged pleated trousers worn by swordsmen and warriors. Admittedly these are "modern" hakama. There are variations based on historical time period and social status. But these should suit most cases. So, lets go over how to make them! Andon Bakama were hakama typically worn by women in an academic setting during the 1900s or so. Modern times, they are usually worn for formal occasions such as graduation.
