Unicorn Dance Costume - Port Mortem

 


It started with the Theme of dancing to America's The Last Unicorn. My design was based off themes in the film The Last Unicorn. And to that end, the final product was a success. 

Here is what I was happiest with: 

  • The costume felt stable and easy to move in. Nothing was loose or felt like it could fall off. 
  • The crown and veil prop worked flawlessly
  • The chiffon flutter sleeves and pants looked dramatic! 
  • I was able to finish with time to spare!
Things I wish were better: 
  • I cut the wrong size for the purple surcoat dress. 
  • The clasps were so expensive! 
  • My crochet top was too small. 
  • I was a bit clumsy sewing the extra doo-dads on the top. (I was going to use SOME of my crochet so help me!) 
  • The shimmery organza did not drape how I thought so no extra shimmer happened and I wasted fabric. 😭
  • I didn't hem my chiffon so it started to fray
Day of the Performance

I neglect to remember how wide my hips are at all times. Thankfully, I unintentionally balanced things out. But I am SO glad I FINALLY got to sew this pattern. I have wanted to for ages. I'd like to give it another go but this time, use my actual measurements. (I am still in the process of losing weight. It's gotten slower but still making steady progress towards my goal!) 

Dance costumes are such an interesting challenge because you don't want to snag your heel on your fabric. (I have done that in past costumes.) 

And that's all there is to say I think. I love the pants and I think I'll hem the flutters. But I think I'd wear a different top.

Hakama Series - Split Leg Hakama

This is the classic style that you likely think of when you hear the word "Hakama". Very wide-legged pleated trousers worn by swordsmen and warriors. Admittedly these are "modern" hakama. There are variations based on historical time period and social status. Becoming a Kitsune: Masks and Makeup

One of the most iconic accessories for Kitsune characters (or skilled swordsmen) is the fox mask. To be fair, this likely is mostly associated with Japanese Kitsune, but they do not hold the monopoly on fox fairy creatures.  I don't think it'll fit right. LOL! Mask Considerations For your own costume, regardless of the culture of origin, the common features to consider are:  Mask Size  How much of your face will the mask cover? Will it go over your whole head like fursuit head?  Or is it meant to be more of a decoration that sits on your head or off your waist?  This will determine how much material you need to use and how to incorporate the mask into the costume.
