Three Finished Swords |
To see how these blades started see: 3D Printing Sword Adventures.
I'll start with Tanjiro's blade as it took arguably the least amount of work.
Tanjiro's Sword
Most of the sword is black in color with some silver trim and a touch of red. The whole thing was printed with black PLA. However, I still coated everything with the grey filler primer. Globbed on gesso and after sanding down the first coat, applied the 2nd coat of filler and sanded that down.
All the parts in black were sprayed with Rustoleum Glossy Black. I filled in the red handle decor with red color shift paint.
Used a bit of nail polish top coat as a base. |
The silver bits were sprayed with a lovely chrome spray paint. Very reflective!
After things dried, I assembled the sword parts. Added a touch of glue and called it finished.
To be honest, I think what I still need to do for it is paint the blade with the Extreme Sheen black paint at least for the blade edges to give the blade a bit more life and metal look. And I should have sealed everything with my glossy finish. But it is mounted for now. I might do the touch-ups another day.
Zenitsu's Sword
For this guy, once the blade was prepped, painter taped the sharp edge and painted the top with the black glossy paint.
Once the black paint dried, I taped the black paint and sprayed the edge of the blade with the silver Chrome paint.Once the silver paint dried, I brush painted into the engraving with color shift yellow.
Then I assembled the sword and mounted it.
I did notice that the yellow went over the silver paint better than the black paint. It might have been worthwhile to use the nail polish topcoat in the lightning to make it even and apply better.
It also could use with a gloss finish to seal things in. And I need to tie the ribbon tassel on the handle still.
Kyojuro's Sword
Most of my attention, care, and effort went into this sword. (Somebody plays favorites.)
The crossguard was coated with XTC-3D, cured, then painted with various color shift paints and a touch of 14K gold colored paint. The smaller parts were coated with nailpolish topcoat and painted orange mixed with the gold paint for a metallic sheen.
The blade was first sprayed with Black Glossy paint for an undercoat.
Over that, I painted with Extreme Sheen Garnet. There were a couple coats of this applied with a sponge.
Then I worked on the flame edging but painting the blade edge in Metallic Festive Red. Took a couple coats. Then I took a brush with the Extreme Sheen garnet mixed with Extreme Sheen Obsidian and painted in the flame motif.
Took a tiny brush and color shift white to fill in the engraving. brushed over it with the garnet.
Sprayed the blade with a Glossy finish, then assembled the blade. Had to use a bit of sculpting foam to really hold things in since I trimmed the tang of the blade a LOT. Perhaps too much. But with a bit of glue, got things to stay in place.
It's kind of the best-looking one I think. Tried my best to make everything look metallic. The blade definitely does. The crossguard kind of does but it's really hard to make a bright orange metal. Maybe brass or copper would have helped but, it does look like the screenshots so...it does look accurate in that sense. :)
