Modesty's Costume Projects for 2022

Most cosplayers and some costumers make a wishlist of costumes to make. I'm no exception. There are a lot of costumes I want to make and a few that I wanted to make in the past that are falling out of favor as it were. So my 2022 Costume List is as follows:

What to make next...

Original Characters

  • Goro the Kitsune
  • Sakura the Kitsune
  • Red Fox
  • Polish Vampire Hunter
  • Unicorn/Unicorn Centaur
  • Circus Centaur
  • Lotara the Drow Elf

Cosplay Characters

  • Linkle (Hyrule Warriors)
  • Dalish Inquistor (Dragon Age)
  • Uravity (My Hero Academia)
  • Rengoku (Demon Slayer)
  • Rescue (Avengers End Game)
Obviously, I can't do all of these in a year. Some of these will be replaced as my interests shift and change. But I'll mention something about the state of each of these.

Goro - In Progress
I'm nearly done with this one I think. I need to suss out some details and make the darn tails but it's a good spot to actually be completed in 2022.

Sakura Fox - Concept
I came up with this concept while writing my Becoming a Kitsune series. I love her. I love the wa-lolita style. I have been unconsciously collecting things for it but I'm not sure if I'll make a serious effort for her.

Red Fox - Concept
This may be a good ren faire costume, but it's not fleshed out well enough. I'm currently not feeling it as a vibe as much as I do for the other fox characters. But sometimes I just get the hankering for making some kind of gothic costume.

Polish Vampire Hunter - New Concept

So this is in part a costume inspired by a pattern and some other research I was doing. I have supplies, patterns, and research for making a traditional polish dancer's vest. I've always loved the idea of turning it into armor and heck I just LOVE Eastern European embroidery and Folk Art design. Again I could blend gothic and Eastern Europe art. I kind of came up with her as a character doing some semi-fanfic writing in my head. ...partially Demon Slayer inspired and mix in some Castlevania + Vampire Hunter D. Plus I could add in a lot of Polish Catholic iconography. And I like bragging about being sorta Polish Catholic. (I'm an American mutt but there is some Polish in there and I am Catholic. Lector at my parish and everything.)

Unicorn - Frustrated and concepting
I keep trying to make a unicorn costume of some kind. Not the pastel, rainbow nonsense but something from what unicorns mean to me. Part of me just wants to get a sick pair of hoof boots. I debate whether to go ancient Greek or Medieval with it. Or possibly something else. I keep coming back to it and not coming up with anything satisfactory or filling with indecision. Do I go satyr style or centaur? Do I base it off one of my characters? I just don't know but I'll keep at it.

Circus Centaur - Concept Shelved
This was my favorite design from the blog series. It just looks so good! I don't think I can afford it this year nor can I think of a good event to take it to. So, it's on the shelf for now.

Lotara - Backlogged
This one is in a bit of danger of abandonment which sucks. I have a lot of pieces for it gathered. It comes to making the coat and armor. And I'm just not feeling the Drow vibe that I was feeling 2 years ago. I may have to do some redesigns to simplify the costume further if I want this thing to be reality. But it's not looking good for 2022.

Linkle - Backlogged
Again, I have pieces, patterns and parts of this costume. But I'm not as in love with the character as I was last year. I feel like she's "too young" for me to pull off properly. I almost turned it into a Red Riding hood spin-off but for now this one is set aside.

Dalish - Backlogged
This is an attempt to resurrect an old project I started over 5 years ago. I have all the supplies, and some new knowledge but haven't felt particularly drawn to this lately. Just not in that Dragon Age mood despite loving the design.

Uravity - Considering
I love those BOOTS. And she's so cute. But I've seen some very talented cosplays already so I'm kind of feeling uncertain of my skills to pull it off. Plus dealing with a visor again? Yeesh. But at least I don't need contacts. She is pretty young and trim though.

Rengoku - playfully considering
May also do Zenitsu, but my Tasty boy Kyojuro has my interest at the moment. Feeling a little teenage girl obsessed which is weird and uncomfortable as a nearly 40 year old. But seriously...who wouldn't want some of those heckin' eyebrows and flaming hair. Plus the uniform is pretty "generous" and makes everyone look thicc. But dat hair...yeeeeesh...I don't know if I have the chops for that. I DON'T KNOW WHY I WANT TO COSPLAY THE DUDES ONLY!

Rescue - putting on Hold
This was going to be my big 3D printed only costume. I spent a good chunk of change for the 3D files. I did a test of helmet parts and already the resizing nonsense is kicking in. I'm using some software to help resize things to my body shape and I'm not in love with the result.
How it should look...

How I would look
10 years ago I could pull it off, but I'd need to do some serious tailoring and consider not 100% 3D printing every bit of armor. I mean, making some parts spandex and only have non-flexible parts for the arms, chest, legs below the knee, and head, I could do some tailor tricks to look a bit more lithe. Or maybe one day I'll lose some inches. Haven't had a lot of luck with that lately (curse you slow metabolism!). So because of my body image feelings, I'm not as excited to make this and will likely shelve it until I feel more confident or come up with a better solution to making this look a bit more flattering.

And that's what I got. I'm always coming up with ideas I feel like but these are the current batch.

Costume Design: Guiding Principles

Part of designing costumes is finding a way to pick from many solutions. Limiting these choices can be the art of design.  I have some of my own "Guiding Principles" or Design Principles when it comes to costume design. Some of these constraints are based on non-mutable factors. (Or currently difficult to change.) The fun ones are a bit on the arbitrary side. These are self-imposed limitations for the costume that as a designer I decide to apply to any given costume.  The point of these principles is to help you make a final decision if you are paralyzed by many choices. I may get hung up on some pretty silly things, so at the very least, this helps me move forward and kind of imply that I had a plan all along.  Immutable Design Principles We might run into some touchy subjects here but whatever, here we go! Immutable principles are either constraints your life situation has you in at any given time or core beliefs about what you wear. This can mean things like religious beli

Costume Fabric Cheat Sheet: How to Pick Fabric for your Costume

In the previous post , I laid out how to describe different aspects of fabric when trying to find a good fabric for your costume. This post will go over ways to apply those terms and actually pick out a fabric for your costume. I will attempt to teach by examples.  4 Avenues of Research Cheat! I mean...look at other cosplays. You can often find images of photoshoots which make for better references than illustrations. If you are lucky, the costume maker may have posted a journal about how they made their costume or at least list the materials they used.  Check for Suggestions in Sewing Patterns Sewing patterns will list suggested fabrics to use for the costume. Pop those terms into a search engine and see the results.  Historical, Cultural, or Real Life Examples With a search engine or books, you can find out about how clothes were made back in the day or what materials are used around the world. You can also check the tags on your clothes to see what it's made of.  Narrow down to

Hakama Series - Hibakama (Scarlet Hakama)

The bright red hakama with a white kimono is a common sight in both anime and video game characters. Shrine maidens or Miko also wear this combination of colors when they work at Shinto shrines. Honestly, there is a LOT of history and cultural significance wrapped up in this one.  Anime/Games: Inuyasha, Genshin Impact, Sailor Moon,  So let's talk Design. Design Considerations Cultural Significance This is one I'd pay attention to if I was creating a character of my own. I assume that already created characters have had this research done and have taken their artistic license.  Some of the research taught me a few things: The color is technically scarlet or vermillion, not "red". 🤷 Miko are not part of the Shinto clergy. Sometimes they are just seasonal workers.  Generally, Miko are young women in their teens or early 20s. After a certain age, they wear different colors.  This was based on Heian nobility colors and fashions.  Color Like I said earlier, the color is ve
